You can reach Vinicunca on public transport. The community on the Cusipata side even has a registration option for travellers who come without an agency. What you give up is the van that waits for you: on your own, every leg depends on the next shared ride turning up.
The details below come from operator and travel sites updated in 2025 and 2026. Times and transport on this road are informal and change, so treat them as a guide, not a schedule.
The quick answer
Take a taxi to Avenida Huayruropata in Cusco before 4:30 am, catch a bus heading south-east to Cusipata (about two hours), then a colectivo or taxi to the Phulawasipata trailhead (about 1 to 1.5 hours). Carry cash in soles for every leg and the entrance fee. Community disputes have closed access before, so check the news the day before.
Can you do Rainbow Mountain without a tour?
Yes. Buses run from Cusco to Cusipata and shared vans or taxis go on to the trailhead. It takes planning, cash and luck with connections.
The independent route is the same as the tour route, minus the comfort. You ride a local bus to Cusipata, the village where tour groups eat breakfast, then find a ride up the dirt road to the car park. The walk is identical. The difference is that nobody carries oxygen for you, and nobody waits if the last colectivo leaves without you.
For a confident traveller with some Spanish and a few days at altitude behind them, it is a good day out. For a first trip to the Andes it is a lot of moving parts before dawn.
How do you get from Cusco to Cusipata by bus?
Take a taxi to Avenida Huayruropata, where buses leave for the towns south-east of Cusco. The first departure is around 4:30 am and the ride takes about two hours.
Salkantay Trekking (updated April 2025) puts the first bus at about 4:30 am, with slower buses that stop and quicker direct ones. Ask the driver to call out Cusipata; it is a small place and easy to miss in the dark. Tour vans make the same drive in about two hours, so a stopping bus will take longer.
A sample plan on Rainbow Mountain Peru (updated March 2026) leaves the hotel at about 3:45 am and reaches Cusipata around 6:30 am. That fits.

How do you get from Cusipata to the trailhead?
By colectivo or taxi up the dirt road to the Phulawasipata car park, about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. Morning colectivos are few and fill fast.
Shared vans run up to the trailhead in the early morning. Miss them and the option is a taxi, which you agree in person and usually book as a round trip with waiting time. Settle the price, the waiting time and the pickup spot before you get in. There is no way to book this ahead online, and both sources above advise a buffer of an hour or more at Cusipata in each direction.
The return is the weak point. Shared rides back down are less predictable than the ones going up, and for the bus back to Cusco you wait on the main road for one with free seats. Budget a long afternoon.
Rather not haggle for a ride down a mountain? The tour with the entrance fee in the booking does it all for you.
Book thisCan you go via Pitumarca instead?
Yes. Take the same bus to Checacupe, continue to Pitumarca, then hire a taxi to the Kayrawiri trailhead. The walk from that side is shorter and steeper.
This is the southern approach through Pampachiri land. Salkantay Trekking says there is no direct public transport from Pitumarca to the trailhead, so you share or hire a taxi. Wikipedia describes the Pitumarca route as a longer drive with a short, steep walk of about 1 to 1.5 hours. Fewer people use it, and services at the trailhead are more limited.
On the tour side, the Pitumarca small-group tour uses this road. Its listing does not state a cancellation policy, so ask before you pay.

What cash do you need, and how do you pay the entrance fee?
Cash in soles for everything: bus, colectivo or taxi, the community entrance fee, toilets and any horse. There are no ATMs after you leave Cusco.
- Entrance fee: a community fee paid in cash in soles at the trail, with your passport. Salkantay Trekking says independent visitors on the Cusipata side register first on the community site vinicuncacusipata.com (in Spanish), choosing the option for travellers without an agency. Payment is still in person.
- Red Valley: it has its own separate fee if you go.
- Toilets: a small charge at each one. Carry coins.
- Horses: rented from local families for cash, agreed on the spot.
- Small notes: drivers and stalls rarely have change for large bills.
- Boleto Turístico: the Cusco tourist ticket does not cover Rainbow Mountain.
How the fees work this year is in our entrance fees post.

One booking that covers the van, breakfast, lunch, a trekking pole and the entrance fee. Leave the cash for a horse.
Book this Tour detailsIs it safe to visit Rainbow Mountain on your own?
The trail itself is safe in good weather. The risks are altitude with no oxygen on hand, and land disputes between communities that have closed access before.
The neighbouring communities have argued for years over who manages the mountain and its fees. In August 2024 a dispute involving Chillihuani and nearby communities turned deadly, and the Cusco regional tourism office asked visitors not to go via Cusipata or Pitumarca for a time (Exitosa). In March 2026 a government-led table agreed to set up a transitional tourism committee for the site (Gestión). Check local news the day before you go; a tour operator will usually know first.
On the mountain, you are your own first aider. Carry water, know the warning signs of altitude sickness, and turn back if they show. Tell someone in Cusco where you are going.

What does an independent day look like, hour by hour?
Roughly a 3:45 am taxi, a 4:30 am bus, Cusipata by about 6:30, the trailhead by 8, and back in Cusco in the early evening.
A realistic plan, built from the two sources above. Every time is approximate:
| Time | Leg | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| About 3:45 am | Taxi to Av. Huayruropata | Agree the fare before you get in |
| About 4:30 am | Bus to Cusipata | About 2 h; ask the driver to stop |
| About 6:30 am | Breakfast, find a colectivo | Morning vans fill fast |
| About 7:30 to 8:00 am | Ride to Phulawasipata | 45 min to 1.5 h on a dirt road |
| About 8:00 am to noon | Hike up and down | Register and pay at the gate |
| From about noon | Ride back to Cusipata | Least predictable leg |
| Afternoon | Bus back to Cusco | Wait for one with seats |
Is a tour better value than going alone?
For most people, yes. A tour adds hotel pickup, two meals, a guide and oxygen, and some include the entrance fee.
Going alone buys freedom: you can start at your own pace and linger at the top. A tour buys certainty. The van waits, the guide watches for altitude trouble, and breakfast and lunch in Cusipata are part of it. Read the fee line before you book: the tour with the entrance fee included and the premium trip include it, while the classic day trip has you pay at the trail.
Our view: go independently if you have been at altitude a while, speak some Spanish and enjoy the logistics. Otherwise book the van.
Pickup at your hotel, breakfast and lunch in Cusipata, and a guide with oxygen: the classic day trip.
Book thisFrequently asked questions
Do you need a tourist ticket for Rainbow Mountain?
No. The Boleto Turístico del Cusco does not cover Rainbow Mountain. You pay a separate community fee in cash at the trail.
Can you do Rainbow Mountain in one day from Cusco?
Yes. By tour it is about 12 hours. Independently, plan on a longer day, leaving before 4:30 am and returning in the early evening.
Is there an ATM near Rainbow Mountain?
Not after you leave Cusco. Bring enough cash in soles, in small notes, for transport, the entrance fee, toilets and any horse.
Can you hire a private driver to Rainbow Mountain?
Taxis in Cusipata do the run to the trailhead if you agree a price and waiting time on the spot. A private tour with a guide and the entrance fee included is the more predictable version.
